It all began with a lost slipper...
MISS EMMA GLASS is afraid of her own shadow. She wasn’t always, but life taught her a terrible lesson. One she cannot forget, no matter how hard she tries.
Afraid to stumble upon said past, Emma keeps her head down, tending to her duties as a governess most diligently. She begins to feel safe again and stops looking over her shoulder, telling herself that he will never find her. Yet she knows to be wary of men, of noblemen in particular, at least until her employer’s oldest friend returns to London. From the moment she sees him, Emma knows she is in trouble.
Or more accurately, her heart.
HUGH LAWRENCE, DUKE OF ASHHAVEN, has spent his life serving the Crown. No woman has ever caught his eye until he returns to England after long years on foreign soil. All of a sudden, his mind strays from his current investigation and starts to linger on a timid young woman with almost fearful blue eyes.
Ash knows he ought not look at her. She is a governess while he is a duke. Nothing can ever become of them; and yet all his good intentions are out the window the moment Miss Glass is approached by the very man he is investigating…for murder.
Determined to keep her safe, Ash breaks the one rule he shouldn’t: he loses his heart to her. If only she weren’t a governess! After all, a duke cannot marry a governess, can he?
BREE WOLF is a USA Today bestselling author and award-winning word wizard, who is rarely seen without a book in hand or fingers glued to the keyboard.
Lord Ashaven is a spy for the Crown. Emma is a governess with a young daughter, Susan. No one but Emma knows who Susan's father is. Emma works for Pierce Markham, Lord Ashaven's best friend. Ash confides in Pierce his greatest fears and asks for his help to solve the murder of Pierce's ward, Daphnes parents. This wonderful end to a fantastic series has great characters, plenty of suspense and a delightful romance.
This is an interesting and complicated story loosely based on Cinderella. The idea is very similar. A neglected and abused girl is rescued by an honorable hero. Emma is governess to Lord Markham’s ward Daphne. Ash, an Agent of the Crown, has come to England to investigate the murder of Daphne’s parents. Ash’s investigation and friendship with Markham allows him to spend a lot of time in the Markham household and therefore with Emma. There is an attraction, but Emma is uncertain. There is plenty of drama in this one. The villain is arrogant, deceitful, and somewhat insane. The other characters are kind, helpful, understanding, and caring. Happily ever after? This is a fairy tale; Ash even finds her slipper. This is a sweet story, with huggable characters (all but a couple of them), and a wonderful epilogue.
Well! If you want to have fun, laugh, snigger and totally enjoy a story, then this is the one to read.
I have so enjoyed it!
It has the perfect balance of hilarity, seriousness and how to deal with familial invasions into a newly wedded couple's lives.
As for the young couple's characters, I cringed many a time on the behalf of Cora and Liam for the utter frustration and totally ridiculous situations which they kept having to deal with. Their patience, until there was none left, was remarkable and the individual strengths which both of them had was just perfect.
I loved this story so much and am more than happy to leave you my voluntary review having just finished reading an early copy of this delightful book.
#1 Once Upon a Devilishly Enchanting Kiss 5* - Ever since Louisa overheard a conversation at a ball, she has hated Phineas Hawke with a passion. It doesn’t help that every time she sees him he teases and needles her, and now his brother has wed her cousin they are thrown together even more.
After a bad judgment call on Louisa’s part leads to anguish and fear for a sibling, her guilt nearly breaks her but an unexpected outburst provides Phineas with an opportunity to gain her trust, and perhaps her affection. Highly recommended romance.
#2 Once Upon a Temptingly Ruinous Kiss 5* - Leonora is haunted by the incident which happened months ago but knows she must rejoin society. On first meeting Drake Pemberton her reaction to him is similar to any man outside of her family but something changes, he seems to understand her and quickly becomes someone she feels safe with. As time goes by he helps her feel stronger and regain her self-confidence. Can there be more between them? Loved the plot, the interaction between the family and the final denouement when Leonora stands up for herself even at great personal cost.
#3 Once Upon an Irritatingly Magical Kiss 5* - A delightful enemies to lovers romance. Christina is determined to protect her friend from an unwanted marriage but how far will she go and what will she do when she discovers he is not the ogre she thinks? Loved this story, the characters, the family element and the adorable little girl Samantha.
#4 Once Upon a Devastatingly Sweet Kiss 5* - Impetuous, stubborn and wildly independent, Lady Harriet is determined to never lose her identity by submitting to marriage. However her love for mending hurt animals has found a new focus on the rigid, lonely Duke living next door to her sister. Bradley Jackson, Duke of Clements closed his emotions off many years ago, if ‘Harry’ bring him back to life, will her life change also?
#5 Once Upon an Achingly Beautiful Kiss 5* - This is both a friends to lovers and a second chance romance - two of my favourite tropes combined. Having read all the previous books in this series, it was obvious that Grandma Edie had been deliberately keeping men from courting her for a reason. I suppose it was a little slow in the reader finding out exactly why Kit had left six years previously but the ending was truly moving and beautiful. I read the entire story in one sitting.
#6 Once Upon An Accidentally Bewitching Kiss 4* - A Sweet Second Chance. One kiss changed everything but too late to stop Nora marrying another. Now Nora is a widow but Troy is loath to risk his heart again and in Nora’s mind there is an insurmountable problem to their ever being together. However neither of them have taken Grandma Edie into account!
