He never expected to matter. She never expected to be seen. But fireflies shine brightest in the dark. Gabriel Scott spends his life behind a screen, invisible to his parents, unnoticed by the world. But one summer spent with his grandparents—and a group of neighbor kids—starts to chip away at that invisibility. Especially when the treasure hunt that brings them together leads to something far more important than gold.
Her window is her world. His kindness cracks it open. When Gabriel meets Hannah, a girl who’s never allowed outside, something shifts. She’s clever. Honest. And the only person who understands what it means to feel out of place. As Gabriel starts to uncover her story, he discovers that sometimes the biggest courage comes not from solving puzzles—but from showing up when someone needs you.
You don’t have to be loud to be brave. You just have to step forward. As riddles lead to revelations and friendship kindles in unexpected ways, Gabriel begins to understand that being different isn’t the same as being alone. And maybe happiness isn’t something you wait for—it’s something you decide to fight for.
He thought he didn’t belong. He was wrong.
🌠 For every child who feels like the odd one out—and for every grown-up hoping they’ll discover how special they really are… this story is yours.
One morning as the neighbors' front door opened, Gabriel once again hung out by the window, peering across the fence. He stood on tiptoes, leaning over the sink to see."Why don't you go out and talk to him?"his grandmother asked, dropping a lump of sugar in her coffee.
"What would I say?" Gabriel wondered, watching Liam go around back for his bike.
"How about 'hello'?" his grandfather suggested, looking up from his paper. "I heard it's a common way to greet people."
A faint smile crossed Gabriel's face."Only those who go out into the world will find adventures. Those who peer through windows rarely do," his grandmother said, winking at him.
Turning from the window, Gabriel sunk against the counter. "Some kind of adventure, talking to someone. That's no big deal."
"Start small," his grandfather said."No one starts out big. Take one step, and see if you feel like taking another." He shrugged. "If not, try again tomorrow."
Looking at his grandfather, Gabriel took a deep breath and before his new-found courage could leave him headed to the door. In one swift motion, he opened it and stepped out onto the porch, took three more steps down the front stairs and walked onto the driveway just as Liam returned from the back yard, bike by his side.
Clearing his throat, Gabriel opened his mouth. "Hello."

It was an amazing story of love and redemption after betrayal and abandonment. But I had already read it. I wish she would tell when these are not new stories.
Delightful story! I enjoyed finding out about how Charles Whickerton and Beatrice came together. Beatrice has found herself in a situation where she may be forced, by her parents, to marry a much older man. When Charles first meets her, he is determined to make her his own. This is a beautiful, romantic tale and I highly recommend it.

Another beautiful story by this intrepid author. I loved the previous books in this series but this one blows the others out of the water. Troy and Nora are such fabulous characters that you struggle to understand why they separated five years ago. Secrets & misunderstandings along with some twists and turns kept my interest from start to finish. I thought that Grandma Edie was wonderful! This is a fantastic story that you don’t want to miss, but it helps to have read the earlier stories, in order to understand the Whickerton family members.
